Blindside waterproofing

When do you need blindside waterproofing?

Blindside waterproofing suits a new basement or addition built against shoring or a lot line where the outside wall face will be inaccessible. As of Nov 2026, pre-applied membranes go against the retention surface before the structural concrete; an existing wall with exterior access needs a different installation sequence.

How is blindside different from positive-side waterproofing?

Blindside describes the access and construction sequence: the membrane is installed first and concrete is placed against it. It can still protect the water-facing side of the finished foundation. “Positive-side” describes that water-facing location, so the terms are not opposing waterproofing principles.

For an accessible completed wall, compare the basement wall methods instead. The question here is whether the waterproofing can be installed and checked before the wall conceals it.

Will the selected membrane work with the wall construction?

GCP describes PREPRUFE Plus membranes bonding to poured concrete. Its separate PREPRUFE SCS system is designed for shotcrete and requires trained applicators. Poured-wall details do not establish shotcrete compatibility.

Ask the designer to identify the wall construction, retention surface and exact system on the drawing. For an addition, flag the connection to the existing foundation before selecting materials.

What determines cost and feasibility?

It depends on the supported surface, wall geometry, penetrations and concrete-placement method. As of Nov 2026, the opened GCP sheets provide installation requirements rather than a residential installed-price range; obtain a project-specific proposal instead of treating a generic membrane allowance as a blindside-system price.

Ask for separate scope lines for substrate preparation, membrane/detailing, protection, inspection and repairs before placement. Compare those with the foundation budget guide; excavation, shoring and the structural wall need their own prices.

What must be checked before concrete hides the membrane?

GCP requires stable, supported substrates and details for seams and penetrations. Its Plus instructions call for inspection and repair of damage before concrete placement. Arrange that inspection as a hold point, with photographs and a record of repaired areas.

Coordinate joint waterstops with the membrane details. Request the manufacturer’s current instructions for corners, tiebacks, terminations and connections; a wall-area price does not show whether these interfaces are included.

Who should decide whether this approach fits your home?

Bring the basement or addition drawings to the foundation designer and waterproofing installer while the sequence can still change. For the SCS shotcrete system, GCP specifically requires trained applicators; this is a professional installation decision.

Ask the local building department which waterproofing and structural details require review. If the wall is already built, request a diagnosis and an accessible repair proposal rather than assuming a pre-applied product can be inserted behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Is blindside waterproofing only for commercial buildings?

The access problem can also occur at a home’s new basement or addition beside a lot line. The designer must specify a system suited to that foundation and construction sequence.

Is blindside waterproofing a negative-side coating?

No. A pre-applied membrane is installed before the concrete and remains on the outside of the finished wall. An interior coating on an existing wall uses a different access path.

Can any pre-applied membrane be used with shotcrete?

Do not assume so. GCP publishes a specific SCS system for shotcrete, with its own materials, application requirements and trained-applicator restriction.

Can the calculator quote a complete blindside system?

No. It has no complete blindside-system rate. Use a designed, itemized proposal for that work and the calculator only for its separately supported scopes.

Plan the next step

Resolve the membrane-to-wall sequence and inspection hold point before the foundation contract is finalized. A low area rate is poor value when the concealed details remain unspecified.
