Concrete waterstop
What does a concrete waterstop do in a foundation?
A concrete waterstop seals the planned joint between concrete placements rather than coating the wall face. As of Nov 2026, Sika’s PVC installation guide describes an embedded barrier spanning the joint; selection must account for joint movement, water pressure and the liquid exposure.

Is the joint moving or non-moving?
Sika’s PVC guide requires the profile to accommodate the joint’s expected movement and exposure. Its Swellstop product, by contrast, is specified for non-moving joints and is not an expansion-joint material. Hydrophilic means it swells when exposed to water; that does not make every strip suitable for every joint.
Have the designer identify the joint type and matching manufacturer detail before accepting a substitution. A swelling strip and movement-joint profile are not interchangeable price comparisons.
When must the waterstop be installed?
The PVC guide places installation before concrete placement, with concrete consolidated around the barrier. Swellstop goes against the first placement before the next pour. Neither is an instruction to push a strip into an existing leak.
For a completed foundation, ask for an assessment of the actual leak path. Keep wall treatment separate from repair of a leaking construction joint.
Which details can interrupt the joint seal?
Sika warns that voids beside the PVC profile can compromise sealing. It recommends factory-made intersections and transitions to reduce field-fabrication risk.
Request a record of profile position, intersections and concrete placement before concealment. A materials list alone does not show joint continuity.
What should the foundation proposal separate?
Separate joint sealing, wall-face waterproofing, penetrations and existing-concrete repair in the offer. Identify the designer’s and installer’s responsibilities.
Compare a specified bentonite system or the general foundation waterproofing scope separately. Neither the calculator nor a generic membrane allowance supplies a waterstop installation price. Request a project-specific proposal for the joint work.
Frequently asked questions
Is a waterstop the same as waterproof paint?
No. Sika’s PVC waterstop is embedded across the concrete joint. It is a joint-sealing detail rather than a coating spread over the wall face.
Can a swelling waterstop be used in an expansion joint?
Do not assume so. Sika specifically excludes Swellstop from expansion-joint use. The selected material must suit the joint’s intended movement.
Can waterstop performance depend on the surrounding concrete?
Yes. Sika warns that voids beside a PVC waterstop can compromise sealing. The proposal should address concrete consolidation as well as the profile itself.
