Sump pump check valve installation
How should a sump pump check valve be installed?
Sump pump check valve installation should follow the pump and valve instructions, with flow directed toward the discharge outlet. As of Nov 2026, PNNL describes the valve as preventing discharged water from returning to the pit; the correct position, connections and air-lock provisions depend on the selected equipment.

What does the check valve actually stop?
The valve limits water in the discharge pipe from falling back into the basin after the pump stops. It does not stop groundwater entering the collection system. Ask the installer to distinguish return flow from a continuing inflow before changing controls or buying a larger pump.
Zoeller identifies a discharge check valve as one way to reduce short cycling. The basin and control range also need consideration.
Which details need the model instructions?
Request the valve model, pipe compatibility and permitted mounting position. Check the flow-direction marking against the intended outlet. An arrow pointing along the pipe does not confirm that the valve is suitable for that pipe or installation position.
Have the installer confirm any pump-specific air-lock prevention detail. Manufacturer instructions differ, so do not transfer a hole size or placement from an unrelated online example.
How can you tell whether the repair worked?
Ask for a water test that shows discharge at the intended destination, a normal pump stop and the condition afterward. PNNL's completion check is water moving away from the building. The motor running while the basin fails to empty is a reason to investigate further.
Request safe future access to the valve and pump. Cutting piping or working around powered equipment belongs in the service scope; do not enter standing water to reach the system.
When is the valve not the cause?
A pump that runs without removing water may have a blocked outlet, an air lock or another fault. Pentair lists several causes; changing the valve without identifying the failure can leave the original problem in place.
If the issue is automatic operation, compare the float-switch decision guide. For a failed pump in a reusable pit, check the replacement scope rather than treating a valve repair as a new installation.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bang after the pump stops mean the motor failed?
Not by itself. Zoeller describes valve closure as a source of a stopping noise. Have the service technician distinguish that from pipe movement or another equipment fault.
Is a sump discharge valve the same as a sewer backwater valve?
No. This guide concerns return flow in the pump discharge pipe. A sewage backup or fixture-drain problem needs a plumbing assessment rather than a sump-valve substitution.
Should the valve be replaced with every pump?
Ask the installer to inspect compatibility and condition and state what the offer includes. A pump replacement price does not establish which existing fittings can be reused.
