Sump pump alarm
What does a sump pump alarm tell you?
A sump pump alarm warns about the condition its sensor or controller monitors; the exact alert determines the next action. As of Nov 2026, Pentair’s controller manual distinguishes high water, pump faults and connectivity alerts, so a beep alone does not prove which component failed.

Which warning is actually active?
Find the alarm model and read the exact indicator or message before resetting it. Record whether it reports high water, power trouble, a pump fault or an offline connection. A phone notification and a local buzzer may not be reporting the same event.
Pentair separates high-water and offline alerts. The former calls for immediate system review; connectivity has its own checks. Record the condition, not just that the alarm was noisy.
What should you do when the alarm sounds?
Assess reported high water promptly. Call a qualified pump professional if inspection is unsafe or water is rising; electrical faults or new wiring need a licensed electrician.
Do not walk through floodwater to reach a plug or alarm panel. EPA warns that wet outlets can create a shock hazard and says electricity must be off before entering a flooded home.
Use the maintenance guide for planned tests after the fault is resolved. The flood-prevention guide separates collection, pumping and other entry paths.
How do you choose local and remote warnings?
Choose local sound, remote notification or both. Ask what remains available without household power, the router or internet; an app does not establish outage behavior.
Zoeller’s backup specification illustrates another distinction: an alarm can be set to warn before backup operation or when backup operation starts. The installer should explain which event your proposed sensor position represents.
What should the alarm test demonstrate?
Have the installer demonstrate the manufacturer’s alarm test and identify what it checks. Ask separately how actual sensor operation, local sound and remote delivery will be verified. A button test may not demonstrate the complete warning path.
Compare offers by sensor type, mounting, power arrangement, notification setup, commissioning and owner instructions. An alarm and a backup pump are separate deliverables; a warning device does not add pumping capacity.
Keep the recipient and service-response plan with the manual. A successful test has limited value if nobody knows what the warning means.
Frequently asked questions
Does a sump alarm pump water out?
An alarm provides a warning. Water removal remains the job of the primary or backup pump and its discharge path; compare those components separately.
Does an offline alert prove the sump pump stopped?
Not necessarily. Pentair documents offline and pump-fault conditions separately. Check the exact device indication against its manual rather than treating every notification as the same failure.
Should an alarm test replace pump maintenance?
No. Schedule alarm verification alongside the pump’s own care and operational checks. Use each component’s instructions; a warning test does not establish that water reaches the discharge outlet.

Plan the next step
Write down the alarm condition and the response it requires before adding more equipment. Price detection, pump repair and backup pumping as separate decisions.
