Pedestal vs submersible sump pump

Which is better: a pedestal or submersible sump pump?

The choice depends on basin fit, cover requirements and performance at the required lift. As of Nov 2026, Pentair distinguishes an above-water pedestal motor from a submersible motor contained in the basin; neither arrangement removes the need to check float clearance and the discharge duty.

What changes between the motor arrangements?

A pedestal separates its above-water motor from the pumping end in the basin. A submersible contains the motor with the pump underwater. Pentair describes the exposed pedestal arrangement as noisier; actual equipment choice still depends on the proposed model.

Will the pump, float and cover fit together?

Check the basin opening, pump footprint, float movement and lid arrangement as a system. A pump that fits on the bottom can still have a control that conflicts with the basin wall or other equipment.

PNNL specifies mechanically attached, gasketed covers with sealed penetrations. Ask the installer to show how the selected pump remains serviceable beneath that cover; motor access does not justify leaving a soil-gas opening.

Which performance and electrical checks still matter?

Pentair bases pump selection on required flow and lift. Ask the installer to record those conditions and show the operating point for the actual model; a change in motor arrangement does not establish sufficient capacity.

Pentair also recommends a professional electrician when an outlet must be installed near the pit. Use a licensed electrician for new wiring rather than treating power work as included in a pump-only purchase.

How should you compare a change of pump type?

Request the model, basin or cover changes, connections, electrical work and operating test in writing. Keep new installation and replacement scopes distinct.

Coordinate any sealed sump and radon design with the radon professional before changing equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pedestal motor sit underwater?

No. Pentair distinguishes pedestal equipment by a motor that cannot be submerged. Follow the selected model’s installation instructions.

References: Pentair.

Is a submersible automatically the right size?

No. The pump still needs to supply the required flow at the installation’s lift and discharge conditions. Compare its performance curve.

Can either installation leave the pit open?

PNNL calls for a mechanically attached, gasketed cover with sealed penetrations. Confirm a compatible lid and service arrangement when choosing the pump.
