Foundation capillary break
Where does a foundation capillary break belong?
A foundation capillary break interrupts liquid water wicking through porous foundation materials. As of Nov 2026, DOE-hosted guidance places a break between the footing and perimeter wall in new construction; a sheet beneath the slab alone does not address that separate upward moisture path.

Which moisture path is the break interrupting?
PNNL distinguishes water moving through openings from liquid drawn through tiny pores by capillary action. Concrete and masonry can wick water upward even when gravity would suggest a downward path.
Ask whether the assessment identifies wicking, an open leak path or airborne moisture. “Moisture barrier” alone leaves the intended job unclear.
Why is the footing-to-wall location different?
The DOE-hosted Healthy and Affordable Housing guide notes that footing-related wicking is often overlooked. It recommends a break at the top of the footing before the perimeter wall is built.
PNNL illustrates a protected slab while the wall still wicks moisture through its footing. Compare that interface with the separate basement vapor-barrier assembly.
What needs to be resolved before concrete placement?
PNNL shows polyethylene between footing and stem wall as a possible break. Ask where the specified material interrupts the moisture path in your design.
Request a drawing showing the material, connections and inspection stage. Record the interface before concealment; a generic roll of plastic does not replace the approved detail.
What if the foundation is already built?
The DOE-hosted recommendation addresses new construction, without a method for inserting material beneath an existing load-bearing wall. Start with moisture diagnosis; consult a licensed structural engineer before considering work at a supporting interface.
Keep the proposals separate: foundation water control, any structural work and later finishes. If white deposits are part of the concern, use the efflorescence guide to frame the observation without treating deposits as proof of a single moisture path.
Frequently asked questions
Does a slab vapor barrier also protect the footing-to-wall interface?
Not automatically. PNNL illustrates how an under-slab layer can be present while moisture still wicks through the footing into the wall.
Does capillary action move water only downward?
No. PNNL explains that capillary suction can draw liquid through porous concrete or masonry against gravity.
Is the new-construction detail a retrofit instruction?
No. The DOE-hosted guidance recommends the footing-to-wall break during new construction. It does not supply a method for altering an existing load-bearing interface.

Plan the next step
For a new foundation, request the footing-to-wall moisture detail before the pour. For an existing wall, start with diagnosis and use the calculator only for separately supported water-control work.
