Sump pump generator
Can a generator run your sump pump?
A sump pump generator can supply backup power only if the pump permits it and the generator meets its electrical requirements. As of Nov 2026, Wayne’s opened sump manual excludes portable-generator use for its covered pumps, so a wattage match alone is not proof of compatibility.

Will the pump manufacturer allow generator power?
Find the pump model and operating instructions first. Wayne’s exclusion applies to its covered pumps; it does not establish a rule for every manufacturer or standby installation.
Ask the pump supplier to confirm the model’s approved power source. If unclear, compare a purpose-built system through the battery backup guide.
Which running and starting loads need checking?
Briggs & Stratton distinguishes continuous load from extra motor-starting power. Its method considers equipment operating together and the largest additional starting demand. Horsepower alone does not supply that load list.
Request the pump’s starting and running requirements, other connected loads and usable outlet ratings. Require the compatibility check before accepting a generator size.
Where can a portable generator operate safely?
CPSC says portable combustion generators belong outdoors, far from doors, windows and vents, with exhaust directed away from buildings. Never operate one in a basement, garage or crawl space, even with doors open. Follow its CO-alarm guidance.
CPSC warns about wet-condition electrical hazards: rain does not make indoor operation safe. Shut the engine off and let it cool before refueling. If you feel dizzy or weak, get to fresh air immediately.
What should the connection and backup plan include?
CPSC warns against feeding house wiring through a wall outlet. Have a licensed electrician specify any connection to building wiring; this guide provides no wiring procedure. For a permitted direct appliance connection, follow both manuals and CPSC’s outdoor-cord guidance.
Separate generator, electrical connection and pump work in the offer. Ask who starts it, how operation is demonstrated and what happens before power is available. Keep the wider flood prevention plan alongside that offer.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one generator wattage that suits every sump pump?
No. Check the pump’s permitted power source, starting and running requirements, and other connected loads. A generic horsepower-based answer does not establish compatibility.
Can the generator run in the basement with a window open?
No. CPSC warns against indoor generator use even with open doors or windows. The combustion generator must be outdoors, away from building openings.
Does a large enough generator override a pump-manual restriction?
No. Wayne’s opened manual excludes portable-generator use for its covered pumps. Resolve the exact model’s power-source restriction before sizing equipment.
