Crawl space rat slab

What is a crawl space rat slab?

A crawl space rat slab is a thin concrete floor used as a durable cover over the ground-moisture layer. As of Nov 2026, PNNL describes concrete over a vapor retarder as optional durability protection; it does not replace the sealed vapor barrier or the rest of an encapsulation plan.

How does a rat slab differ from a vapor barrier?

The concrete provides a tougher working surface; the continuous vapor retarder beneath it controls ground moisture. PNNL’s enclosure detail keeps the liner continuous across the floor and up supports and perimeter walls.

Ask the installer to draw the moisture layer before agreeing to concrete. Compare that function with vapor-barrier assemblies; concrete by itself is not the complete sealed-ground detail.

Does pouring concrete mean the crawl space is encapsulated?

No. PNNL’s unvented-crawlspace guidance also addresses walls, insulation, air sealing and a drying mechanism, with local review of radon, pest and flood requirements.

Use the encapsulation guide and crawl-space calculator for the wider enclosure scope. A rat-slab offer should identify which of that work already exists and which is excluded.

How much does a crawl space rat slab cost?

It depends on access and the specified floor assembly. As of Nov 2026, HomeGuide lists $6–$12 per square foot for general installed concrete slabs; this is a secondary comparison reference, not a measured crawl-space rat-slab range. Its guide warns that hard-to-reach work can cost more.

Request a separate rat-slab quote covering preparation, the vapor retarder, concrete delivery, placement and the finished surface. Record accessible floor area and how material will reach it; do not multiply a general slab rate and treat the result as a complete crawl-space price.

What moisture and code details must stay accessible?

PNNL calls for local review of the enclosure’s fire, combustion, radon, pest and flood requirements. Ask which inspection strips, service points and flood openings must remain clear before the floor and perimeter details are concealed.

For standing water, investigate crawl-space collection and pumping first. The concrete cover does not define a drainage route, and covering the ground is not evidence that the water source has been corrected.

When is a smaller repair enough?

If the existing liner’s problem is a damaged seam or an isolated tear, compare repair with the proposed concrete overlay. PNNL instructs installers to inspect and seal liner damage; its concrete layer is optional.

Ask a qualified crawl-space contractor to assess the enclosure before a pour. If the proposal includes altering footings or supporting walls, have a licensed structural professional review that scope; a protective floor guide cannot specify structural changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rat slab a substitute for a vapor barrier?

No. PNNL describes the optional concrete layer above the vapor retarder. Keep the moisture layer continuous and sealed.

Is a concrete floor required for every encapsulated crawl space?

PNNL calls the thin concrete layer optional. Ask the local building department which requirements apply to your particular enclosure.

Does a rat slab solve standing water?

A concrete cover does not provide a specified collection or discharge route. Investigate the source of standing water before choosing floor protection.

Does the crawl-space calculator include a rat slab?

No. It estimates supported enclosure components. Get the concrete floor and access work priced separately rather than treating the encapsulation range as a rat-slab quote.

Plan the next step

Choose concrete only when the added durability solves a documented need. Use the crawl-space estimator for the enclosure and request a separate offer for the protective floor.
